Letter to My Mother

The Letter to My Mother series describes an imagined situation in which I was writing a letter to my mother who lived in Hong Kong. As I start writing in Chinese, the English subtitles appear:

"Respected Mother,

Like the thousand miles that come between us,

Clouds of high hopes may hide one's sunny nature;

While youthful passions and dreams

Fade for the tired traveller,

They may ignite forgotten longings,

And make short the waiting years."

The subtitles include phrases traditionally used in Chinese letter writing. Some objects photographed suggest occasions such as a Chinese wedding or a tea ritual. Some are constructs of child-like fantasy. Some point to the making of the drama or the photographic event itself.
